This week, I want to talk about why it is so important to step out of your comfort zone. A lot of people are afraid to try it but what they don’t realise is, without doing this scary-but-simple thing, we can never truly grow.
It’s no secret that anyone who is successful didn’t get where they are without continually stepping out of their comfort zones. Kurt Cobain was so nervous before his first gig with Nirvana that he was sick before going on stage. Ed Sheeran even tried getting out of going to school on the morning of his first live performance at a talent show because he was so afraid. Imagine if they both decided not to go for it?
I understand that’s two back-to-back music examples but, do you see my point?
Okay, okay, fine. Here’s an example for those who don’t like music…
Jeff Bezos (founder of Amazon and the richest person in the world) left his secure, high paying job on Wall Street to start an online book store. If that’s not stepping out of a comfort zone, then what is?
In fact, in the early stages of Amazon, he actually told investors that there was a 70% chance of failure or bankruptcy. I’ve got so much respect for this man.
Even right now, I am stepping out of my comfort zone with this blog. Truth be told, it was nerve-racking in the beginning since it’s never really been my thing. But, I just knew that it was something I wanted to do and I owed it to myself give it a shot. I told myself a while ago that I will not accept a life of talking and not doing, and you shouldn’t either.
What’s The Worst That Could Happen?
Life is all about trying. Everything we do is a result of trying and that is what is amazing about life – we all get to do it. Some of us just like to push it a little more.
We all know people who talk a good game. I’ve got friends who are the masters of talking and not doing. They claim they are going to do this or achieve that. The scary part is, these people believe themselves.
They want to do more. To do something different. They want what we all want in some form, but when it comes down to it, they are afraid of stepping out of their comfort zone. Scared of the unknown. It is more comfortable to continue living in their bubble because they know where they stand and there is no real risk. Does this sound familiar? Do you really want to live that way?
Don’t Let Your Fears Get In The Way
The fear of not knowing is too much for most people to handle and it outweighs their desire for change. It’s sad but it’s true. We all want something, whether that be financial freedom, successful relationships, or even to be a guitar legend (this one may or may not be about me…) but none of it can happen without stepping out of our comfort zones and taking risks.
Financial freedom cannot exist without first learning how to create passive income or starting a business that brings in money without you having to be there. Successful relationships cannot be achieved without either going out to meet new people or actively putting in the work to improve your current relationships. Being a guitar legend cannot be achieved without putting the hours in and also, the scary part, getting out there and playing.
Trust me, getting on stage to play in front of a room full of people was DEFINITELY an example of me stepping out of my comfort zone!
I have realised that most of us spend our lives doing things for others because it is ‘safe’. We are guaranteed money at the end of the month and all we have to do is show up and do as we are told for however many hours a day. It requires no risk or sacrifice, only our time and our dreams. No big deal, right?
Jim Carrey put it perfectly in his speech at the Maharishi University of Management:
We Are All Just Trying To Figure It Out
As I grow up, I realise that ‘adults’ really don’t know anything. When you are young, you listen to everything an adult has to say because you believe it is absolutely, one million percent right.
Well, technically, I’m an adult now (25) and I’ve got to say that none of us know anything. We are all just figuring it out as we go and for many of us, the easiest path to take is the one laid out for us. Maybe your ultimate life goal is to get a steady job and cruise through life and that’s is absolutely fine. Go you!
If you’re like me, however, and you want a little more from life, I encourage you to take risks and embrace failure, because it is in these moments that we truly grow and without them, all our hopes and dreams remain just that – hopes and dreams.
Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from achieving your dreams or live the life you want. It may seem like a huge step but take it from me, stepping out of your comfort zone is never as scary as staying where you are right now. You genuinely have nothing to lose so just go for it!
The only way you can fail is if you stop trying. Otherwise, it is just another step closer to success!
